My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos has confirmed that the classic rom-com's third instalment has begun filming in Greece.

Vardalos, who will write, direct and star in the movie, revealed the exciting news in a tweet posted on Tuesday (21 June).

"We are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and thank you so much for the lovely messages of just waiting," she shared in a video from her hotel room in Athens.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 has been confirmed since April 2021, although production had been slowed down due to the pandemic.

The sequel will be dedicated to Michael Constantine, who played Gus and died in August 2021, and will follow the wedding of Toula (Vardalos) and Ian's (John Corbett) daughter, Paris (via Deadline).

Following Constantine's death last year, Vardalos paid tribute to her co-star and shared an Instagram post with the caption: "He had told me he wouldn't be able to join us for the third film and his wish was that we go on.

"I wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael's decision and will always treasure his last messages to me, hoping we were filming soon."

The original 2002 film follows Toula, a single woman whose very Greek family want her to marry a Greek man, but she instead falls for and marries American teacher Ian.

In the 2016 sequel, Toula and Ian have a 17-year-old daughter who they raise in the house her parents gave them, all while they try to rekindle the spark in their marriage.

Fans last saw Paris (Elena Kampouris) invite her longtime crush Bennett (Alex Wolff) to prom. Although it has yet to be confirmed whether Paris will marry Bennett, the ending suggests that it's a real possibility.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a huge success, with the sleeper hit grossing more than $360 million on a $5 million budget and earning Vardalos an Oscar nomination for the screenplay.

A release date for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is yet to be announced.
