Americans cut their spending unexpectedly in May compared with the month before, underscoring how surging inflation on daily necessities like gas is causing them to be more cautious about buying discretionary items. U.S. retail sales fell 0.3% last month, down from a revised 0.7% increase in April. Sales at furniture and home furnishings stores fell 0.9%, while sales at food stores rose 1.2%. Business at restaurants was up 0.7%. Adjusting for inflation, which jumped 1% from April to May, retail sales fell even further. The report offers discouraging news about the economy as consumers were still providing critical support to the economy even after a year of seeing prices spiral higher for gas, food, rent, and other necessities.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reasserted his country's support for Russia on issues of sovereignty and security in a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. State media say Xi told Putin that China is “willing to work with Russia on issues concerning core interests and major concerns." He added that “all parties should responsibly push for a proper settlement of the Ukraine crisis.” China has refused to criticize Russia's invasion of Ukraine or even to refer to it in such terms. Weeks before the Russian attack, Putin and Xi met in Beijing and oversaw the signing of an agreement pledging that relations between the sides would have “no limits."

Tesla reported 273 crashes involving partially automated driving systems, according to statistics released by U.S. safety regulators on Wednesday. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cautioned against using the numbers to compare automakers, saying it didn’t weight them by the number of vehicles from each manufacturer that use the systems, or how many miles those vehicles traveled.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is joining the White House as a senior adviser to President Joe Biden. Bottoms will become director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. She succeeds Cedric Richmond, who departed in April for a senior role at the Democratic National Committee. Bottoms is joining at a challenging time for the White House, with Biden’s public approval rating at the lowest of his presidency and inflation at record highs, both of which are among factors complicating Democrats’ chances of retaining control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

Swedish authorities say an exploding tire led the driver of the unmarked police car carrying Swedish artist Lars Vilks to lose control last year and crash head-on with a truck. The Oct. 4 crash killed three people, including the 75-year-old cartoonist. Vilks had faced death threats and lived under police protection since his controversial 2007 sketch of the Prophet Muhammad. The crash lead to fears it was a terror attack. But authorities on Wednesday said the investigation into the crash was closed and a prosecutor called it “a tragic accident.” Vilks was largely unknown outside Sweden before his Muhammad drawing. Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.

Ikea says it's seeking new owners for its four factories in Russia and to liquidate its product inventory there because of the war in Ukraine. The world’s biggest furniture brand already had suspended operations at its 17 Russian stores and paused exports and imports involving the country. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced plans to establish an infectious disease crisis management agency to better prepare for future pandemics. Kishida, marking the end of the current parliamentary session and weeks ahead of the July 10 national elections, says Japan has managed to significantly slow COVID-19 infections, but it is still too early to “put our guards down.” He said there’s a need to “carefully walk to the path toward returning to ordinary lives” as Japan gradually resumes social and business activity as well as tourism. Kishida, who had low public expectations when he took office in October and recorded unimpressive 40% support ratings, has since steadily gained popularity to above 60%.

A Russian man has gone on trial in Germany on charges that he planned to kill a Chechen dissident. Valid D., whose last name wasn’t released for privacy reasons, is alleged to have accepted an order from a cousin of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov to kill an opposition member living in exile in Germany. The German news agency dpa reported that the defendant refused to testify Wednesday before the Munich Higher Regional Court. He is said to have been tasked with the murder of the brother of a well-known opponent of Kadyrov who was also living in exile. The designated victim was living in Bavaria. The Russian man was arrested before the killing could take place.

The German government has unveiled a bill to resolve a long-running dispute between federal authorities and the country’s 16 states over where to build land-based wind power plants. Some German states have bristled at proposals that would require them to set aside at least 1.4% of their surface for wind parks by 2026 and 2% by 2032. The states argue that some citizens don't want the facilities near homes. The compromise bill announced on Wednesday would give states some flexibility to build fewer wind power plants if they can get other states to agree to build more, including by paying them. Europe’s biggest economy aims to produce electricity only from renewable sources by 2035.

An Israeli court has found a Gaza aid worker guilty of several terrorism charges. Mohammed el-Halabi, who was the Gaza director for the Christian charity World Vision from 2014 until his arrest in 2016, was accused of diverting tens of millions of dollars to the Islamic militant group Hamas that rules the territory. Both he and World Vision have denied any wrongdoing, and an independent audit in 2017 also found no evidence of support for Hamas. He has been held in Israeli detention since 2016. He has not yet been sentenced. The guilty verdict was announced Wednesday by the district court in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba.

Olympic hammer champion Anita Wlodarczyk will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a thigh injury she sustained while chasing a thief trying to break into her car. The Polish three-time Olympic gold medalist wrote on Instagram that she “totally severed” a thigh muscle during the incident last week, but remains intent on competing at the 2024 Paris Games. She had posted a photo on Twitter on Friday flexing her musles in front of her car, writing that she had chased down a thief who tried to break into the vehicle and turned the person over to the police. After her surgery, the 36-year-old Wlodarczyk said she still has “great motivation” to win her fourth Olympic gold in Paris in 2024.
