South Korea has launched its first domestically built space rocket in the second attempt after an earlier liftoff failed to place the payload into orbit. A successful launch would boost South Korea’s growing space ambitions but also prove it has the capability to build a space-based surveillance system and bigger missiles amid animosities with rival North Korea. The three-stage Nuri rocket carrying what officials call a functioning “performance verification” satellite blasted from South Korea’s only space launch center Tuesday afternoon. Officials are to announce whether the launch was successful later Tuesday.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics are closing the books on the pandemic-delayed Games. The organizing committee is to dissolve by the end of the month. The final cost is being placed at 1.42 trillion Japanese yen. This is between $10.5 billion and $13 billion. The exact dollar number is difficult to calculate because of the recent fluctuation in the exchange rates between the yen and dollar. At least half of the costs are borne by Japanese taxpayers. The final costs are at least twice as much as organizers predicted when they were awarded the Games in 2013. A study by the University of Oxford has said these are the most expensive Olympics on record.

The war in Ukraine is fueling fears of a natural gas emergency in Europe. Russia has throttled back supplies to more countries, this time to major economies and major users such as Germany and Italy. Supplies are enough to generate electricity and power industry for today’s needs. But Europe needs to fill its underground gas storage this summer. If it can't, the 27-member European Union could face emergency gas rationing by governments and economic disaster this winter. Meanwhile, higher gas prices and the threat of a cutoff are raising pressure on Europe to find substitutes and reduce how much gas it uses — and fast.

An Israeli Cabinet minister says the country's outgoing coalition government will fast-track a bill this week to dissolve parliament, setting up the country for its fifth elections in three years. Welfare Minister Meir Cohen told Israeli public broadcaster Kan on Tuesday that the coalition would bring the bill to a preliminary vote the following day. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday that he would disband his alliance of eight diverse parties and send the country to the polls. New elections — the country's fifth in just over three years — are likely to be scheduled for October and raise the possibility that longtime leader Benjamin Netanyahu, now opposition leader, will be able to stage a comeback.

When Syrian refugee Fadel Alkhudr arrived in Germany in 2015, the first thing he saw when he stepped out of the train in Cologne was the city’s majestic cathedral. The art carver became so fascinated by the famous Gothic cathedral with its landmark twin-spires and intricate ornaments that he spent hours looking at the landmark building on the Rhine river, taking photos of it, drawing sketches and eventually started creating a wooden replica of it. For over two years — or around 5,000 hours, as he says — the Muslim worked on creating a two-meter (6.5-foot) -tall copy of Germany’s best known Christian house of worship. It is now on show at the original cathedral's visitor center in Cologne.

Title IX athletics violations aren't as simple as comparing similar teams and seeing how much money is spent on both. Recent Title IX lawsuits and federal complaints have focused on universities that have cut sports teams during the pandemic to save money. The question, in basic terms, is whether the ratio of men’s athletic participation opportunities to women’s opportunities is “substantially proportionate” to undergrad enrollment. But even these cases can be hard to prove under what’s known as the three-prong test, and the general lack of case law in the area can lead to different interpretations by judges across the country.

A series of clandestine, against-the-odds helicopter missions to reach besieged soldiers are being celebrated in Ukraine as one of the riskiest, most heroic feats of military derring-do in the four-month war against Russia. The flights delivered supplies and evacuated wounded during the last-ditch defense of the Azovstal steel mill. It was surrounded by Russian forces in the brutalized city of Mariupol. Ukrainian troops were pinned down for weeks, their supplies running low, their dead and injured stacking up. Ukraine’s president first spoke of the sometimes deadly helicopter resupply missions only after Azovstal’s defenders started surrendering in May. The Associated Press has found and interviewed some of the wounded who were rescued from the death trap.

Nikola Jović of Serbia and Ousmane Dieng of France are among the top international prospects in Thursday night's NBA draft. Both are 6-foot-10 and only recently turned 19 years old. They each possess great court vision and are good ball-handlers for their size. Jović is a more accomplished scorer, having shot 35.6% from 3-point range for Belgrade club Mega. Dieng played for the New Zealand Breakers in Australia’s National Basketball League as part of its Next Stars program, which has become a hotspot for NBA prospects.

Poland’s most powerful politician, conservative ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, says he has given up his role as a deputy prime minister in the government. He said he made the move to focus on the party and upcoming elections. The move by Kaczynski was expected. His government role focused on security issues and he said in an interview published Tuesday by the state news agency PAP that he had planned the move earlier but it was delayed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kaczynski is widely understood to be the most important politician in Poland, guiding government decisions and hand-picking those who serve in top positions. His departure from the government is not expected to change that.

Noah Syndergaard gave an overworked Angels bullpen a much-needed breather Monday night, throwing 7 1/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals after relievers had combined for 19 innings in a five-game, four-day series at Seattle.

Adnan Mohammed teaches Latin dance for an hour a week in a Damascus studio, helping his students forget the troubles of war — if even briefly. For young Syrian men and women who come to his class, dancing is a form of release, finding their rhythm in music away from their country’s many social and economic pressures. Syria's 11-year war is temporarily pushed out of their minds, as are the politics, the anxiety over the economic crisis and the country’s constantly depreciating currency. For one of his students, Amar Masoud, the dance classes are a “breath of life.”
