South Korea has launched its first domestically built space rocket in the second attempt after an earlier liftoff failed to place the payload into orbit. A successful launch would boost South Korea’s growing space ambitions but also prove it has the capability to build a space-based surveillance system and bigger missiles amid animosities with rival North Korea. The three-stage Nuri rocket carrying what officials call a functioning “performance verification” satellite blasted from South Korea’s only space launch center Tuesday afternoon. Officials are to announce whether the launch was successful later Tuesday.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics are closing the books on the pandemic-delayed Games. The organizing committee is to dissolve by the end of the month. The final cost is being placed at 1.42 trillion Japanese yen. This is between $10.5 billion and $13 billion. The exact dollar number is difficult to calculate because of the recent fluctuation in the exchange rates between the yen and dollar. At least half of the costs are borne by Japanese taxpayers. The final costs are at least twice as much as organizers predicted when they were awarded the Games in 2013. A study by the University of Oxford has said these are the most expensive Olympics on record.

An Israeli Cabinet minister says the country's outgoing coalition government will fast-track a bill this week to dissolve parliament, setting up the country for its fifth elections in three years. Welfare Minister Meir Cohen told Israeli public broadcaster Kan on Tuesday that the coalition would bring the bill to a preliminary vote the following day. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday that he would disband his alliance of eight diverse parties and send the country to the polls. When Syrian refugee Fadel Alkhudr arrived in Germany in 2015, the first thing he saw when he stepped out of the train in Cologne was the city’s majestic cathedral. The art carver became so fascinated by the famous Gothic cathedral with its landmark twin-spires and intricate ornaments that he spent hours looking at the landmark building on the Rhine river, taking photos of it, drawing sketches and eventually started creating a wooden replica of it. Poland’s most powerful politician, conservative ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, says he has given up his role as a deputy prime minister in the government. He said he made the move to focus on the party and upcoming elections. The move by Kaczynski was expected. His government role focused on security issues and he said in an interview published Tuesday by the state news agency PAP that he had planned the move earlier but it was delayed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kaczynski is widely understood to be the most important politician in Poland, guiding government decisions and hand-picking those who serve in top positions. His departure from the government is not expected to change that.
