A California estate that contains a house with a tree growing through the middle of it has hit the market at $3.8 million.

Described as a 'once in a lifetime opportunity,' the property contains five different dwellings - including a one-bedroom, one-bathroom tree house that was built around an enormous tree.

The huge trunk and branches go straight through the home's living room, and could be seen jutting out of the front of the house on the outside.

Located in Pismo Beach, California, the compound stretches across six acres of land and is less than a mile away from the beach.

In addition to the tree house, there is also a main house, a museum, and four more smaller units on the sprawling estate.

As for the other units - two of them serve as studio apartments while the other two have one bedroom and two bedrooms.

The main house also comes with a shed - which can also act as another studio apartment or guest house if preferred, since it has a full bathroom.

'Each home has wooded settings and private yards and decks set amongst this oak studded lot tucked into a beautiful, private coastal canyon,' the listing reads. 'All units have been remodeled and each have designated parking areas close to the units.'

'All of the homes are in an amazing, private setting amongst many trees in this amazing coastal canyon retreat within walking distance to the Pismo Beach pier and downtown Pismo Beach,' the listing continued. 'It's a unique and rare property that must be seen to appreciate it.'

The house was posted on the popular social media account Zillow Gone Wild, where it quickly went viral - leaving the internet with many questions, including what would happen to the house if the tree died and if rain ever gets in through the parts left open for the tree's branches.

The units all have a rustic feel to them, and contain a lot of wooden furniture

'But… trees grow?' pointed out one person, while another asked, 'Won't it leak?'

'The BUGS,' read a third comment, while a fourth said, 'That seems like a cleaning nightmare!'

'Seems dangerous. I don’t trust it,' wrote a different user. Another commented, 'I’d 100 per cent injure myself in that house.'

Others simply made jokes about the bizarre structure, with one writing, 'I would love to have a tree in my way all the time for $3M.'

'I stubbed my toe and bumped my head looking at these pics,' joked another person, while someone else commented, 'Wood I buy it? Absolutely knot.'

'Seems like a tripping hazard to me,' read a different comment.
